What is Conservation?

Conservation is a very important process and strategy that can be used for the protection and careful preservation of any resource. Now a days, due to huge number of Humans on Earth, the resources are becoming scarce and they are not enough for the current population. Conservation works as the Sustainable strategy against the exploitation and wastage of the resources. We will have a complete description of Biodiversity Conservation Types and Strategies in this blog.

2. What is Biodiversity Conservation?

Biodiversity Conservation is a Sustainable Solution for Environmental Crisis of the present time. Now a days, all types of lives are under threat as they are facing Environmental Problems when the expose to the Environment. Biodiversity is under great threat because of Natural and Anthropogenic Causes. Many of the causes of Biodiversity loss are due to Human Activities while some are completely nature but triggered by Human Activities.

Biodiversity is very important as it takes part in many of the natural processes on Earth. These processes are necessary in maintaining the Environment. This conservation help us to manage the ecosystems without excessive damage and destruction. It is also responsible for the management of health of the species that lives on Earth. Many of the species die because of Climate Change and extreme weather conditions such as Heat waves, Extreme Cold etc. These scenarios avoids by Biodiversity Conservation. The diversity of species is also reduced at a great extent due to Environmental Problems.

All of these problems can be tackled by Biodiversity Conservation. It has proved itself to be effective against the threats to Biodiversity in our Environment in the present time. This blog has a complete description about Biodiversity Conservation Types and Strategies in detail.

3. What are the Objectives of Biodiversity Conservation?

Objectives means the goals of any process or strategy. The objectives of Biodiversity Conservation shows that, what are the purposes and requirements behind Biodiversity Conservation. Following are the Objectives of Biodiversity Conservation:

i. Conservation of Biodiversity:

Biodiversity conservation makes sure the protection, maintenance and preservation of Biodiversity from Environmental Hazards, Climatic conditions and other external hazards such as hunters. This strategy makes sure that the Biodiversity under consideration, should be in the safe habitat away from the hazards of all types. This will help in maintaining and healthy survival of the species diversity. All types and species of biodiversity should survive without getting damaged or injured on Earth.

Example of Conservation of Biodiversity:

Conservation of animals at National Parks, Conservation of Indus Dolphin etc.

ii. Sustainable Utilization of Species:

Many species of animals and plants are utilized by humans for several economic purposes i.e. for making Pharmaceutical products, medicines, products and useful goods. It is good to utilize Biodiversity for welfare of humans, but it should be in a Sustainable way. We have made many of the species endangered and extinct by over-exploiting them. Biodiversity guides us and demands the Sustainable utilization of the species by limiting their use to sustainable levels. In order to avoid their endangerment and extinction. Because every specie of Biodiversity is equally important in the Environment, so it must be safe.

Example of Sustainable Utilization of Species:

When a specie is near its endangerment, we should shift towards other alternative species that are present in large number. etc.

iii. Maintenance of Life-supporting Systems:

Many life-supporting systems such as forests etc. are damaged or disturbed by the humans and human activities. This is not fair for the environment as these life-supporting systems makes life possible on Earth for all living things including humans. Biodiversity conservation has a goal for maintaining Life-supporting systems in order to maintain the hygiene of the Environment. This goal include the Rehabilitation of natural systems, Restoration Practices to save the earth and Preservation of Natural and useful systems to be healthier for a long-time and to provide us benefits.

Example of Maintenance of Life-supporting Systems:

Rehabilitation of Coral Reefs to save and conserve ocean ecosystem, Reforestation and Afforestation etc.

Strategies of Biodiversity Conservation

4. What are the Types of Biodiversity Conservation?

There are two types of Biodiversity Conservation. These types are different from each other but have the same purpose to Conserve the Biodiversity. Following is the complete explanation of these two types:

1) In-situ Conservation:

In-situ Conservation can also be called as on site conservation. It means that the specie of Biodiversity is not harvested or migrated to another place for its safety. But the preventive measures or conservation is practiced in its Natural Habitat. These species are protected at the same place where they lived. This aims to conserve the specie while living in its natural population and natural Environmental Conditions. The method of conservation depends upon the types of specie and their habitat. Some habitats are not in good state and healthy, so we cannot apply in-situ conservation in those habitats. An advantage of In-situ Conservation is that, it ensures the protection and conservation of all number of individuals present on the habitat at the same time. While it is not possible in the case of Ex-situ Conservation.

Example of In-situ Conservation:

National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries are the examples of in-situ Conservation etc.

2) Ex-situ Conservation:

Ex-situ Conservation can also be called as Off site conservation. In this method of Conservation, the effected species are migrates to the safe habitat that can be a lab, any national park or any protected area away from the Environment and other external hazards. Ex-situ conservation can be done when the specie is able to migrate from one place to another. After migration they are conserved and protected with precautionary measures in order to save them from any crisis that threats their lives. An advantage of Ex-situ Conservation is that, we can provide clean and safer environment to the animals and plants that needs conservation. The survival and health will be better for them.

Example of Ex-situ Consservation:

Animals migrated to the zoo for providing protected environment, etc.

5. What are Biodiversity Conservation Strategies?

Biodiversity Conservation Strategies are those processes and steps that we take for the Conservation purposes. These strategies can be applies on Biodiversity and living systems in order to Protect them and conserve them. Conservation Strategies can be of different types according to the need of the crisis exposed to Biodiversity. Following are some Biodiversity Conservation Strategies:

These Biodiversity Conservation Strategies are suitable for Conservation. Explanation of all these points is in the next paragraphs. This blog contains Types and Strategies of Biodiversity Conservation.

6. What is Habitat Conservation?

Habitat is an environment in which an organism or community of organisms lives. A suitable habitat is very important for the health and survival of the specie. Habitat Conservation refers to the conservation of natural habitats of the species in order to conserve them and protect them. This strategy work for the Restoration and Rehabilitating the natural Habitats for the considered species. It involves improving the Environmental Conditions, availability of food, water and shelter for Biodiversity and much more. This works for the conservation of all essential resources needed for the living of the species in their natural Habitat.

Example of Habitat Conservation:

Wetland Conservation and Forest Conservation are the examples of Habitat Conservation.

7. What do you know about National Parks Establishment?

National parks are the areas protected by state and used for the enjoyment for public and Biodiversity Conservation and Preservation. National parks makes sure the Conservation of Biodiversity by providing natural Habitats to rare and endangered species so these areas are in suitable conditions that supports Biodiversity and helps in Biodiversity Conservation. Establishment of National Parks is a very big step in the Conservation field so as it is best for the protection of species and their conservation. National park provides safety to the species from Environmental hazards and other external hazards.

Example of National Parks:

Margalla Hills National Park and Kirthar National Park, are two National Parks in Pakistan etc.

8. What do you mean by Breeding of Suitable Animals and Plants?

Breeding is the sexual reproduction that produces offspring in Animals and Plants. Breeding is a natural process but we can breed suitable species of plants and animals in specialized environments such as labs and Green Houses. This strategy guides us to breed and reproduce suitable and useful species of Plants and Animals in order to increase their population and in order to conserve them. Breeding will make the population safe as they will be in large number and there will be less risk of their endangerment and extinction. That is why breeding is a good choice for useful and economically important plants and animals for their better survival.

Example of Breeding of suitable Species:

Breeding of Horse and Donkey, showed improved characteristics in Mule etc.

9. How can we Save Endangered Species?

Endangered species are those that are small in number and are near to extinction. The best scenario to save any specie is to conserve them before their Endangerment. But if we reach the point of endangerment , then the best way is to migrate them to specialized locations and environments. We should pick up the Endangered animals from their natural environments and shift them to the suitable and reliable habitat that do not have any threat for the Biodiversity. They should not expose them to the Environmental hazards and also other hunting animals. They should be protected in specialized and monitored locations to avoid the risk of damage and death.

Example of Endangered Species:

Indus River Dolphin and Markhor (National Animal of Pakistan) are facing endangerment in Pakistan etc.

10. How can we protect Native Species?

Native species are those which are naturally found in an area and compliments the Environmental Conditions of that area. Native Species are very suitable for their natural habitat and provides many Environmental Benefits being in their natural habitat. The strategies of Biodiversity Conservation also include the protection of Native Species. Because these species supports life and cherish in great ways in their Natural Ecosystems. We should protect the Native Species and destroy the invasive species in order to maintain hygiene of our Environment. We should support and Protect Native Species.

Example of protection of Native Species:

135 Native Plant Species are facing endangerment in Pakistan, we should work for their protection. etc.

11. What is Sustainable Utilization of Biodiversity?

Sustainable utilization means utilizing or using resources in a way that they will be available for the next generation. We utilize many of the plants and animal species in our daily life for the welfare of humans. Biodiversity Conservation teaches us to be sustainable while using natural resources and natural facilities. It does not mean to eliminate their use, but to use them wisely. The best way to be sustainable in utilizing Biodiversity, is to use alterative species that are in bulk and are far away to be endangered. We should inhibit the use of Endangered species or species that are near to extinction.

Example of Sustainable Utilization of Biodiversity:

Try to consume mutton and beef once a month, in order to Conserve species etc.

12. Conclution:

Conservation is the protection and suitable preservation of Natural resources. While Biodiversity Conservation is the Protection, Preservation and Management of Ecosystems. This strategy is in use for the protection of species of Plants and Animals that protects and maintains our Environment on Earth. There are two methods for Biodiversity Conservation In-situ (on-site) and also Ex-situ (off-site). The Biodiversity Conservation Strategies includes Habitat Conservation, Breeding of suitable plants and animals, establishment of National Parks, Save Endangered Species etc.

Biodiversity Conservation is the need of the time. Because every specie play their role in maintaining and protecting the Natural Environment and they Humans consume for different Purposes. We should practice Sustainable living in order to Conserve Biodiversity. This will eventually protect our Natural systems and Environment.
